Have you ever felt like you have run into your longtime friend or side-kick as you read an amazing book? Good books let us get lost in their world. Fiction books let us live in imaginary times and places; informational books let us travel through time and space to see and understand in ways we often could not in real life. We make connections when we read. We connect to what we know about the world, and we connect to other books / literature we've read. However, mostly we connect to ourselves and our past experiences. That's when you begin to think of your friends who could be joining you in the oohs and aaahhs of a book. Books invite us into new places and take us on adventures, and when you think of a friend to share that experience with, that's the person who you want to say, "hey, you've got to check this one out!"
So here is a book trailer for you to consider:
Author: Roald Dahl
Titles: Esio Trot, The Twits, George's Marvelous Medicine, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Genre: Fiction
What I like about these books: Roald Dahl has a great way with taking mundane, ordinary, or even depressing living conditions and delve into the lives of the everyday characters. Maybe it's his British outlook that gives him a unique talent to make such grim stories come to life, but I know I can always count on Roald Dahl to make me giggle and gasp as I read. He turns ugly situations beautiful. As he says in The Twits, "A person who has good thoughts can never be ugly." The hijinks and Tomfoolery that go on will always leave me smiling, and his good endings always brighten my day.
They are great for classroom read-alouds and I especially liked using them to check for comprehension because of the jokes and funny business happening (you have to understand why gluing boys to a tree or turning a living room upside-down (The Twits) is funny. If you haven't read Roald Dahl's books, I recommend them! They are great for a 3rd grade kid or anyone looking for a good chuckle.
